Twenty-seven years ago, Byron and I left our previous employer rather than sign non-compete agreements. That decision ultimately led to the founding of Equinox Information Systems. From the start, we prioritized profitability alongside creating an enjoyable workplace culture that honored family commitments.
That philosophy is literally printed on our business cards: "While we value professional accomplishments, we honor family commitments above all else." This commitment to work-life balance has contributed to an impressive average employee tenure of 13 years — particularly noteworthy given that one-third of staff joined within the previous five years.
What makes me most proud today is seeing my two sons become part of the company. Matt, who was three when Equinox started, earned his Master's degree and was hired in the support department before transitioning to sales. Chris, born shortly after the company's founding, worked as the company janitor during high school, later joining the testing team after completing his Master's degree in 2011.
Their involvement reinforces the family-oriented culture while bringing together youthful enthusiasm with experienced wisdom. Seeing the next generation embrace the values we built this company on — that's something a balance sheet can't capture.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to leave on time for a family dinner.
